Our response was the Ultra Mourning Dove (UMD) with 50% larger hopper meeting their needs.
The new 2009 Ultra Mourning Dove is our 5th generation of redesign and is gorgeous. With a much prettier
"bird feeder" look and 4 1/2 gallon (18 lbs) capacity, it sets off any feeding station and the birds feed all day.

The First of the New 2009 Introductions - It's a STRETCHED Mourning Dove.
The Original Mourning Dove is a great feeder but awesome was the goal. By taking the
Mourning Dove's near perfect configuration and s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g its length, the new Extra Long Mourning Dove takes first prize with its gorgeous appearance and 3.8 gallon (15 lbs) capacity. One of Our Most Exciting 2009 Introductions - A Small-Pole-Mounted Large Feeder. A Hurley-Byrd First.
The Original Mourning Dove has been resized to a 2 1/2 gallon (10 lbs) feeder so it can be mounted
on our new Heavy Duty Small Pole Mount. We can now provide a large sized
feeder, pole mount and high quality cedar pole in one package.
Plus, while designing the Mini Mourning Dove, we also designed the new Extra Large Blue
Jay Fly-through as an exact match. These two feeders compliment one another
perfectly and will make a beautifully diverse feeding station.

The 2009 New Introductions:
In years past we crafted the original Mourning Dove with its 2 1/2 gallon (10 lbs)
capacity and its big brother, the Ultra Mourning Dove having a 4 gallon (16 lbs) hopper.
For 2009 the whole line is redesigned to step it up (and down) to suit any bird feeding need you
may have. We now offer three brand new feeders and introduce the newly redesigned Mourning Dove and
Ultra Mourning Dove. Starting with the Mini Mourning Dove having a small 2 gallon (8 lbs) hopper through
our largest production feeder ever, the Extra Long Ultra Mourning Dove with its huge 6 1/2 gallon
capacity of 26 pounds. Whatever your needs in the large feeder arena, we have you covered.
Each are extremely well crafted and protected with our penetrating oil finish.
Installations and Erecting:
Mourning Doves are normally erected using our Large 4x4 Pole Mounts (poles not included – The
Mini Mourning Dove is the exception. See below or click here) and are usually coupled to a matching Seed Catcher Tray. Seed Catcher Trays introduce a second level of bird watching pleasure by providing a large, open and unobstructed landing area to accommodate the bulkier/clumsier birds such as Blue Jays,
Cardinals and Mourning Doves. Most importantly though, seed catcher trays provide a
second opportunity for the birds to consume dropped feed which
saves YOU lots of "seed money" ultimately paying for itself and the feeder too.
We recommend mounting these feeders on 4x4 posts (3 1/2" x 3 1/2") using our mounts since they
cannot be hung due to their weight. But they can be used as patio table, deck, ground or stump feeders.
The seed trays have a perfectly sized center hole that slips over and down the pole prior to mounting the feeder. The tray can then be pressed tight against the feeder's mount or slid further down the pole
and secured at any location along the poles length using the supplied brass screws.

What's makes the Original Mourning Dove different from
the rest of the
Mourning Doves?
The Mourning Dove shown to the right is the forth largest feeder with a seed capacity of 3 gallons (12 pounds) and is also the forth shortest of the series. Make no mistake, this IS NOT a small feeder.
Like the Mini Mourning Dove and Extra Long Mourning Dove, it has a different hopper shape compared to the Ultra Mourning Doves. Its hopper's vertical sides are not as wide or as tall and the tapered cut
from top to bottom
is more pronounced producing a strong "V" shape. With the hopper's prominent taper coupled to its shorter height, width and length, this obviously reduces the feeder's overall seed holding capacity. But because of these factors, we have achieved a more ample
feeding platform
for your birds.
The Original Mourning Dove is perfect for those looking to set up their first feeding station or anyone needing a high capacity filler feeder and wants the quintessential looking large bird feeder.
This is a superb choice.
What's makes the Ultra Mourning Dove different from
the rest of the
Mourning Doves?
The Ultra Mourning
Dove shown to the right
is our second largest
capacity feeder holding
4.6 gallons (18.5
pounds) yet is our third shortest feeder. The Ultra Mourning Dove's
hopper is shaped differently than the regular Mourning Doves.
The hopper's vertical sides are taller, wider
and the tapered cut
from top to bottom is less
pronounced, having
more of "U" shape.
Due to the hopper's
less prominent taper,
extra width and height,
the feeding platform's
"feeding area" is somewhat reduced. But
doing so has allowed us
to craft a feeder with a
very substantial seed holding capacity for the convenience of less filling and assures there is ample feed for your birds at all times.
If you seek a large capacity feeder and live in an area having heavy snowfalls or receive abnormal amounts of high winds, this is the feeder you need. It's roof holds less snow and due to its more centralized center of gravity, will be less prone to weigh and wind damage.

What's makes the Extra Long Mourning Dove different from
the rest of the
Mourning Doves?
The Extra Long Mourning Dove shown
to the right is our third
largest in the series with a 3.8 gallon (15.4 pound) capacity, yet it's our second longest feeder offering more room (in a linear fashion) for the birds to feed.
Compared to each of
the Ultras, it has a
different hopper shape.
The hopper's vertical sides are not as wide
nor as tall and the
tapered cut from
top to bottom
has a more pronounced
"V" shape. This has allowed us to achieve
a more ample feeding platform for the birds but reduces the feeder's seed holding capability.
Due to its extra length
when compared to the Original Mourning Dove,
it has 28% more capacity
but still falls short of both Ultra Mourning Doves.

The Mini Mourning Dove shown to the right is a scaled down version of the Original Mourning Dove. Do not be mistaken, this is not a small feeder by any means, it's just small in comparison to its
bigger siblings.
The Mini holds 2 1/2 gallons or 10 pounds of seed and since its weight is centered over the mount, a small pole mount and 1 1/2" square pole can be used for erecting this feeder.
In all other aspects, it's a Mourning Dove. The base, vertical sides and roof are all crafted from the same weight and grade of lumber. It has
a seed splitter, solid
brass hook and eye
roof latch and
double thick Plexiglas.
Add the Extra Large Blue Jay fly-through and you have a beautifully matched set of feeders that will cater to a wide variety of birds.
