Designed by Ducks Unlimited - Built Hurley-Byrd Tough
Ultra Limited Offering
We've built Duck Nesting Boxes over the years and always at our customer's request..... and this run is no different. Dan R. of MN contacted us the other day and requested a set of boxes for his wild ducks. So, we are offering them to all our previous customers and newsletter subscribers only. This IS NOT a public offering.
Hurley-Byrd DOES NOT design nesting boxes. Why?
We are not the authority on nesting box requirements, which are very specific. We leave that to the
professionals in their field. In this case, Ducks Unlimited specifies the dimensions and we built the perfect box.
What does Hurley-Byrd do? We do what we do best.... build them like no other.
Each box is handcrafted with our heavy duty premium grade western red cedar in a full 1" of thickness.
Each box is then assembled with some seriously gnarly screws holding it all together for years (decades?) of use.
We then add various craftsmanship functions to further step up box.
Each Duck Nesting Box includes oval entrance holes instead of inferior rounds. - Ovals are all hand cut.
Deep cut Duckling Ladders under the entrance holes (exit for ducklings). Makes getting out easier.
Full swing open side door for cleaning and maintenance.
Three swing out door closure points allowing various installations. One point from the front,
one from the back and one from the side itself. Use one or all three to secure the door closed.
These boxes will stand up to the test of time, which is ultra important for nesting boxes.
The longer a nesting box can stay put and age, the better. We have found over the years an aged box
will far outperform a new box. Think like a parenting bird for a moment. They seek the best protection for
their young. A nice new shiny box looks great on a store shelf but a mother bird will fly right past.
An aged box melds into the surroundings and is less likely to attract predators.
BUT, there are a few things a craftsman can do to assist in getting the box occupied.
Once built, each of our boxes is hand sanded to break any shiny glare which
produces a box which is already melding with its environment. Only age will add he right colors.
We also hand sand all the hard edges and roll them over hard into a large radius. This does two things.
One: Helps delay decay which always starts at the sharpest, thinnest edge. We want the box to age, not rot.
A rolled edge will shed water better and allow the box to last longer.
Two: And most importantly, breaks the visual (unnatural) sharp edge. Birds do everything by sight.
When your prospective parent views the box, there will be less striking characteristic to the box,
hence they are more likely to accept it as their new "hidden" home for the babies.
Purchase Option Two - Disassembled and Requiring Full Assembly. Everything needed included:
This offer puts two boxes into one shipping box to save on shipping costs.
We build each box fully then disassemble and mark each piece, screw hole, etc.... alpha numerically.
Reassembly will be simple and straight forward. When you have completed the assembly, the box will be
strong and sturdy, probably a bit more so than fully assembled boxes since they did not get
jostled around through the shipping and handling process.
Overall size of each box is the same as a single unit: 31" in length, 10" wide and 15" deep.

HUGE Door for Easier Cleaning and Maintenance. Deep Cut Baby Duckling Ladder.
Obviously, nesting boxes need to be opened for cleaning, maintenance and to check to see who's there.
Each Hurley-Byrd Duck Nesting Box has a HUGE swing up door allowing you to clean and care for the box as
needed. Please DO sterilize the boxes each winter before your ducks arrive. The door can be secured
from three different point. Either from the front, back and side or any combination of all three.
The appropriate screws will be supplied.
All Duck Boxes need a means for the duckling to climb out when the time comes.
Some boxes have screens (poor choice as they fry in time), some use plastic netting (HORRID idea as the
netting can entangle baby feet and beaks. Some simply scratch the inside of the boxes front board.
Works but does not meet HB standards.
Hurley-Byrd has developed a means of cutting deep horizontal slots into the board as shown below.
The slots do not extend to the board's edge, which would allow insects and drafty winds into the box.
Only a shop with our craftsmanship skills can pull this off safely.
Okay, so it's not all that safe but we know what we're doing.
